An “interdimensional” Nevada grocery store filled with stunning produce, alien portals and unexpected landscapes contains a 52,000 square foot art installation hidden behind a refrigerator door.

“When I got to Las Vegas, I saw several advertisements from the airport and from social media,” said Steve Yalo, supermarket visitor from Long Island, New York.

The mastermind behind the projects is Meow Wolf, an art production company that creates multimedia experiences to transport audiences to endless realms of wonder. According to the Omega Mart website, tickets are currently $ 55 for general admission.

Yalo posted a video of his experience on TikTok; it has millions of views.

“I didn’t expect this video to go viral. I might have expected a few thousand views because it’s an interesting place, but 3.5 million! I’ve never seen a video win so much exposure, ”he said.

Omega Mart includes 60 different visit environments. In total, 350 artists participated in its realization. The portal fridge contains “Omega sodas”, which don’t really exist. Neither of the alternate realities that guests see.

At the center of the experience is a mystery: Employee ID cards throw users into a mystery they can try to solve. Some spend 3 to 4 hours deciphering the case, the premise of which is that the owner of the grocery store has mysteriously disappeared.

Along the way, visitors see shelves mostly covered with fake packaging designed by children. However, you can buy “mammoth pieces”, “organic moth milk”, “salted nut-free peanuts” and “plausible-refusal laundry detergent”.

“When you walk in it looks like a grocery store, but there are multiple passages to new areas and rooms, which I can only describe as fascinating interactive art installations,” Yalo said. “The attention to detail is amazing. You can spend hours reading the hilarious labels of all the particular products on the shelves.”

“This is not a typical art exhibit. There is actually a mission to accomplish and a full storyline to follow if you pay attention to it,” Yalo said.

Omega Mart’s sensory vibe is courtesy of Beach House, Brian Eno, Amon Tobin, Shrine, Android Jones, and other music and visual effects artists.

Most clients spend several hours walking around. Many plan annual tours to see additions, improvements, and new rooms added to the permanent exhibit.

The concept of Omega Mart was born in 2009, when artists created a pop-up grocery exhibit in a warehouse.

The current exhibit features a secret bar called Datamosh, with 48 seats. Finding it is a challenge: there are no directions or signs.
