A major new exhibition is planned at the York Art Gallery – featuring key figures in British art and literature.

Beyond Bloomsbury: Life, Love and Legacy will explore the life and work of a group of writers, artists and thinkers known as the Bloomsbury Group.

The group included writer and feminist pioneer Virginia Woolf and her sister, painter Vanessa Bell, as key figures. The group was active in England in the first half of the 20th century and had a profound effect on British art and literature.

The new exhibition in partnership with the National Portrait Gallery and the Museums of Sheffield, will present over 60 major loans of oil paintings, sculptures, drawings and photographs by Bell and his contemporaries, including Dora Carrington, Roger Fry and Paul Nash.

Beyond Bloomsbury will be at the York Art Gallery from March 4 to June 5, 2022.

The exhibition will also feature new work by artist Sahara Longe, which has been specially commissioned by York Museums Trust and Sheffield Museums.

There will also be an exclusive premiere of Bloomsbury-inspired murals designed by graphic designer Lydia Caprani, who worked in conjunction with the York LGBT Forum and Kyra Women’s Group to create the pieces.

Members of the Bloomsbury group are recognized for contributing to monumental change in the LGBTQ+ rights movement, and the works on display will examine and celebrate the group’s LGBTQ+ ideas and relationships.

Becky Gee, Curator of Fine Arts at York Museums Trust, said: “We are delighted to be able to tell the stories not only of the artists, but also of the writers, dancers, activists and philanthropists who were linked to the Bloomsbury Group.

Tickets for Beyond Bloomsbury: Life, Love and Legacy are £10 and can be booked through the York Art Gallery website. Concessions are available. The exhibition will last until Sunday, June 5, 2022.
