Local curator and artist, Katie Sandisonlaunches its brand new art exhibition “Figurative Impressions and Abstract Expressions” this weekend, which celebrates SA’s leading female painters.
After approaching 16 abstract and figurative artists – all of whom stood out as dynamic, hardworking and inspiring women – Katie curated a unique artistic experience outside of the gallery system.
Located at the newly revitalized Adelaide Airport, the dynamic exhibition is an example of how many artists have cultivated successful careers in the arts outside the traditional gallery structure.
“My intention was to provide a perfect opportunity for other female artists to show their creations in a public space that was outside the gallery system. I researched some of Adelaide’s most inspiring artists online and approached them with my concept and the response was fantastic,” said Katie.
“I then offered this to the Adelaide Airport team and Penfolds Wine bar and Kitchen for sponsorship. The whole process was very fast and difficult, [especially] during the complexities we face with COVID.
“I then chose the charity for the VIP front door art award, the Zahra Foundation, who were so enthusiastic about the event [and continues to support] women and non-binary people.
“Figurative Impressions and Abstract Expressions” features paintings by:
Eliza Piro Katie Pearson Megan O’Hara Kari Bienert
Katie Sandison Melanie Crawford Jackie Reichstein Elizabeth Wojciake

Curator Katie Sandison has developed a collaborative approach to art vernissages over the past few years with different exhibition spaces.
The exhibition opens to the public on Sunday May 1, displayed near Qantas Gate 26 and Virgin Gate 14 until July 10, 2022.
