local women donate art supplies to the Family Violence Unit | Community

Emporia’s Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Unit recently hosted an open house for its brand new headquarters on Hicksford Avenue in Emporia. The following afternoon, another civic group – the Riparian Woman’s Club – passed by to help FVSAU celebrate the occasion by donating children’s art supplies including coloring books, markers and pencils.

The supplies may be destined for the “refuge room” – which may be occupied by children waiting for family members to collect them.

Like the Unit for Combating Family Violence, the Club des Femmes Ripaines has a committee dedicated to combating domestic violence. This includes supporting the FVSAU and similar agencies statewide with donations whenever needed.

“We are helping support them during Domestic Violence Month,” said Jenny Holtkamp, Woman’s Club member. “If they need Christmas presents or whatever, we try to donate for that.”

Sadly, most of the RWC’s efforts over the past year and a half have been sidelined due to the pandemic.

However, in October, for Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the RWC planted purple arcs across Emporia and Greensville County. Six months earlier, they planted rows of windmills outside the municipal building in Emporia for National Child Abuse Prevention Month.
