KGH employees receive more than 400 works of art from the community – Kelowna News

Over 400 Kelowna General Hospital employees receive a hand-painted artwork from the community this week.

The “Share the Sunshine” project was started by Kelowna artist Michelle Droettboom, after she wanted to find her own way to honor KGH ICU and COVID staff.

What started as a call for Okanagan artists to help with the idea has turned into a huge show of support. Four hundred and seven paintings with personal messages inscribed on the back of each canvas went straight to the hospital on Wednesday afternoon, where each employee in those departments will choose the design they want.

Droettboom says that now that the paintings are done, she couldn’t be happier.

“We did it,” exclaimed Droettboom. “It’s amazing, and it means a lot because I wanted it to be a joyful day and a day full of hope, and I think it shows with art.”

Megan Roberts is the manager of the local OPUS art store in Kelowna. She helped deliver the canvases after Droetboom asked for help. Roberts was kind enough to cut costs for the canvases and said it was the least she could do to thank healthcare workers.

“We’re really about art in the community, and it’s a community building activity. We are so grateful for all the support, the healthcare workers and everything they have been through and are doing. It was an easy little engagement to say thank you, ”said Roberts.

With all the hurdles and fatigue healthcare workers have faced throughout the pandemic, KGH Foundation executive director Jaymi Chernoff said the move couldn’t have come at a better time.

“Everything is happening for a reason and even just as a result of everything that is happening this week, it is so touching. Knowing that it is for our healthcare workers, who like everyone in the community, feel tired and we are tired, so it’s a perfect move for this time around, ”Chernoff said.

Droettboom thanked the healthcare workers for their commitment to keeping the community safe and thanked them, and described the artists and everyone who helped bring this project to life as “simply the best”.
