JEREMY OLSON COLUMN: I’m thrilled to be here and serve this community – Bemidji Pioneer

Cheers! I am very happy to have the opportunity to be the next superintendent of schools in the Bemidji region.

I want to start this community communication by introducing myself and my family. My name is Jeremy Olson and I am fortunate to be married to my wife, Becky, who recently worked as a special education paraprofessional.

We have four children: Naomi, Abby, Lydia and Anna. As a family, we enjoy the lakes and woods of northern Minnesota that make Bemidji a natural draw. We feel very lucky to live in such a beautiful part of the state.

This year will mark my 15th year as superintendent serving the districts of North Dakota and Minnesota.

I started my career as a superintendent in the Pingree-Buchanan school district, then served as a part-time superintendent for the Underwood and Henning school districts.

For the past four years I have served as Superintendent of Crookston Public Schools. Before becoming superintendent, I was a teacher and director serving the communities of the Spirit Lake Nation in North Dakota and the Cheyenne River Tribe in South Dakota.

I believe these experiences have prepared me to lead the Bemidji School District and I am both honored and honored to have the opportunity to help continue the work of the district.

In the short time I’ve been here, I’ve been trying to connect with community members and learn more about Bemidji.

I had the opportunity to attend a Greater Bemidji meeting and learned about the work that is done not only to attract new people to the area, but also to advance projects that will improve the local economy . I was also immediately impressed by the forward-thinking and collaborative nature of this group.

As I continue to meet people, I am pleasantly surprised at how proud people are of the community of Bemidji and the opportunities this community has to offer.

In those first few weeks, I was amazed at how much Bemidji has going for him; fireworks, art festivals, summer activities, economic development and expanding business opportunities, to name a few. There seems to be a spirit of optimism and excitement about the future of the Bemidji community.

As I continue to meet with school staff in the Bemidji area, I am impressed with the dedication to our students and their families that I continue to see. It has been extremely gratifying to see how much our staff cares not only for the students they work with, but also for the families we serve.

I am also impressed with the wide range of opportunities available to our students from preschool offerings, STEM opportunities, career academies, college-level courses, as well as all of our extracurricular activities. What I discovered during my short stay in Bemidji is that we have so much for us to do.
