KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) — “My mom told me to paint the city and I said ‘okay’, I hope that’s what she meant,” explains the artist Lucky Easterwood.
Since 1996, Easterwood has been painting his murals all around KCK.
“My first mural was on 7th and Quindaro and the title was ‘Something To Live For’,” says Easterwood.
More than two decades later, the mural is starting to fade, but the message remains clearer than ever.
“It was back when there was a small activity in the neighborhood, and we wanted to address it with action. As the community leaders took to the streets, so did I, my message was in my painting.
Easterwood says that that year crime in the community dropped dramatically and from that point on it has never stopped.
With every mural there is a story and a focus on young people.
His most recent mural, titled “A Brighter Day,” on the Community Boxing and Fitness Center side on 17 and parallel, is no different.
“The intention to get young people to look at this mural and be inspired by a better future to know that there is a better day. No matter what you’re going through, there is always a better day, ”says Easterwood.
A mission to beautify and uplift the community, which Lucky has voluntarily given for years through his non-profit organization Murals of Inspiration.
Even crossing state borders to do several murals, but he hopes that by continuing to speak with his hands the community will do their part to help support him through the process.
“Lucky Easterwood and Channel Five represent Kansas City,” Easterwood says.
Lucky completed this mural titled “Brighter Day” earlier today and a number of community members and local dignitaries came to lend their support.
